Q: Who can join the Carleton Chapter of Acacia Fraternity?

A: Any man, attending a post-secondary institution (Carleton, Ottawa, or Algonquin), on by his own free will expressing interest that can give and take qualities desirable to the members of the current Chapter. He must be presented with a bid and upon completion of the Pledge Program be accepted by no less than two thirds of the active Chapter in good standing.

Q: Why should I join Acacia?

A: You should join because you want to. Past members have joined for a number of reasons including but not limited to: charity work, business opportunities, active social life, personal wellness and development, and a fine fraternal experience.

Q: What makes Acacia better than other fraternities?

A:  While many Fraternities cater to one type of person, Acacia sees beyond the style of clothes you wear, how much you parents make, or the type of music you listen to. We are a Fraternity created for all men to enjoy. We firmly believe that we are not the best but that there is none better!

Q: How long do I have until I become a Brother?

A: After our recruitment schedule is posted, and after our recruitment weeks, you can expect to be a probationary member from 4-8 weeks. Afterwards, pending your successful completion of our program, you can enjoy the benefits of being a fully initiated Brother and learn the mysteries and secrets we've held since our inception as Acacia (and beyond).

Q: Are you affiliated with Masonry?

A: Acacia Fraternity was founded by 14 Master Masons in 1904. Since then, we still hold small ties, with many of our members going on to becoming initiated into Freemasonry. When we were founded, it was a requirement to be a Mason prior to being recruited, however that requirement has been abolished since 1960.

Q: Am I paying for friends?

A: Money cannot buy friends. If initiated there may be Brothers with whom you have nothing in common. The dues that are charged by any organization go directly to the operations. If requested, we can present to you a copy of our budget to indeed show that you are not buying friends but instead contributing to the success of a way of life.

Q: Do I have to be paddled and drink all the time?

A: Absolutely not. The typical 'frat-boy' image that Hollywood has put in our minds has no place in Acacia. Occasionally we too enjoy a drink or two, however we are Gentlemen and strive to keep that image. We also have a no hazing policy and were the first Fraternity at Carleton to incorporate this into our Constitution.

Q: How much time will I be required to give to the Fraternity?

A: We hold a Chapter meeting once a week. They usually run for about one and a half hours. They take place in the evening and are scheduled to avoid conflict with your schedule. As a pledge, expect to spend at least one evening a week with the Brothers; however, you're welcome to spend more. We stress that you're not giving us your time, rather that we're giving you memories.

Q: Will Acacia take away from my education?

A: The order of priorities for an Acacian is: 1. Scholastics 2. Acacia 3. All other campus activities. We stress academic achievement. We know its importance and help you achieve it as well.

Q: Can I join more than one fraternity?

A: No. Simply put, it is a matter of trust. There are over 100 years of ritual, symbolism, and lessons to be learned. These are restricted to the confines of our members. Upon joining you take an oath, sworn upon your honour as a man, that what you learn, you may not reveal to anyone.

Q: How do I join?

A: Call any Brother, Active or Alumni and they will put you in touch with the right people. If you prefer, you can fill out the Recruitment Contact Form located on the right side of this page. You response will be sent directly to our Executive email account and we will contact you soon! If all else fails, please send an email to carletonacacia@hotmail.com
